This surprises you? I've seen this around forever, and as the page notes, it's quite popular with some.

For a real idea of horror, devote some time to figuring out what, exactly, is in Unicum, Benedictine, or other apertifs...

The Mongols drank a lot of fermented mare's milk.

The only thing that has surprised me after I discovered that I own a recipe for wine made from instant coffee was the fellow who fermented some caterpillars.

We had an old-fashioned cocktail party for New Year's eve and invited people to clear out the liquor cabinets and bring along whatever they like. So of course, some wiseass brought along some Cynar. Having read about it in the past, I avoided it and most of the people who tried it were pretty repulsed.

MKK

Even shoe polish ...

I remember reading quite some time ago in a book about the Soviet army of how desperately bored soldiers who were denied access to alcohol coped by resorting to a trick using shoe polish and bread.

I didn't know how that would work, so I Googled on "shoe polish bread alcohol" and the first link that came up was this. (http://blogs.salon.com/0001476/2002/10/18.html)

My first thought was I'll have to try that someday. Of course, I rather like Cel-Ray soda.
