More art studios

[ angelfish ] Back to Gowanus today, for more art. Some pretty amazing stuff.

I’ve been fiddling around with Photoshop, tryng to get the hang of the new painting engine. I’ve figured out how to make and save brushes, so I’ve got a brush palette that’s enough like the old one that I can still use it, while still having a few of the new brushes that the new engine allows. It’s not a substitute for actual physical painting with real pigment molecules, though. Some of the deep oil glazes I saw in the open studios had me almost mesmerized, and I want to see if I can get those effects in acrylic.

I'm a sucker for beautiful fish. Birds, too (hint, hint).

I checked out Ella Yang's website: she's startlingly figurative for someone you like. What do you see in her that's so special? I think she's good, but the online repros didn't blow me away. She reminds me of Ma's favorite painter, Milton Avery, I think with the way she uses color.

Matt also agrees that's a beautiful fish

The fact that you drew it in Photoshop makes it even more impressive to me. IMHO the slickest work you've done on your website so far.

Vicki agrees--that is a beautiful fish.

Rick Berry does that also

At foolscap (http://www.foolscap.org/guests.html), Artist Guest of Honor Rick Berry (http://www.braid.com/Androidiaei-0.htm) told us that he often does that = start with a drawing, scan it, then start pushing pixels around. In his slide show, he'd do a step-by-step description of how he started with a small sketch, scanned it in, brought in scans of old tools or metalwork, added on, extended the image by online drawing, etc. way cool!

Luke thinks it's a beautiful fish also.
