Dover coloring books

Y’know what’s a good, cheap source of reference material for illustrators? Dover coloring books. Yesterday I stopped off at Coliseum Books after work and picked up Fashions from India and Empire Fashions. Four bucks each!

I also got The Eyre Affair, the first of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next novels. I was a bit annoyed that these were filed in Literature; I’d been looking in the science fiction section, ’cause where else are you gonna look for a book about a time traveler from an alternate universe where people can step into works of fiction? I guess the publisher figures this main audience for this series is the sort of people who think SF will give them genre cooties. I’m wondering if I should read Jane Eyre first. And maybe Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday.

Then Games Club at [livejournal.com profile] bigscary’s place. I only played a couple games of Money, scoring 760 points in the second.

I still haven't read Jane Eyre and I adored The Eyre Affair.

Actually, though there were bits where I was sure there were in-jokes, I think on the whole I may have enjoyed it *more* for not knowing how 'the original' was 'supposed' to come out. But I'm twisted.

I heart Dover books. Somewhere in this house (over at my parents' place) are the Tom Tierney paper doll books I had from Dover. Wonderful stuff.

Dover deserves praise for keeping Olaf Stapledon's "big four" novels in print year after year.

Occasionally, a prestiege or academic publisher will turn out an edition of one or another, but Dover's rather homely-looking paperback doubles (Star Maker and Last and First Men, Odd John and Sirius) are always available.

Dover also has a wonderful collection of math and chess reprints. They're invaluable.

I don't think I've ever read Jane Eyre, although I'm sure I've seen an adaptation of it. The book is a fun read and I'm looking forward to reading more.

The Ambercon we're going to next weeking has a SpecOps based RPG. Someone (Evil Stevie, perhaps) should license this for a game.
