Everything's up to date in Jersey City

avramSo there I was, ’bout a quarter after four in the afternoon, surfing the net on my laptop, suddenly the net.radio drops out. No biggie, it’s Radio Paradise, it does that a lot. Then I noticed that the three tabs I had downloading pages in my web browser were taking a real long time to download. Hmm, did those bastards building the house next door do something to knock out the net connection? Then I heard the air conditioner shutting down, and noticed my lights flickering.

cadhla asked if the power was off in my room, which answered the question I’d been about to ask her. We still had power — I could see the kitchen light on, dimly. I figured we might have blown a big fuse or something, so I went outside. My neighbors were coming out, looking around confused, their power was out too. Bodega on the next block, flickering lights. I walked down Newark Avenue, trying to see how far it went. I’m glad I didn’t keep walking.
Anyway, it doesn’t look like we ever fully lost power for more than a few seconds. We had lights, and the fridge kept working, though we kept the air conditioning off to keep from straining things.
Some parts of Jersey City were out. Around 9 PM I walked down to the harbor to get a look at lower Manhattan, and see if I could meetakawil and ladymondegreen coming in on the ferry. There were whole blacked-out blocks near the water, and a building on fire. A little taste of apocalypse. While I was sitting at the dock, the power came back on in those regions, so when I got back home I turned on the AC. The Internet didn’t come back till around 1 AM.
And also, I guess because the universe decided I needed a little extra suffering to make up for having electricity during a blackout, one lens in my glasses fell out. I’m glad I keep a backup pair in my bag.
