I’m wondering about underwear. See, Melorne, as I’ve more or less settled on her, has these wings:

[ chibi Melorne ]

She doesn’t always have them, sometimes they’re just tattoos on her back, but sometimes she does. So she tends to go for these backless tops, to keep from busting the backs out of her shirts when she pops her wings out. That’s all fine and good, but I’m wondering about bras.

Mel’s not particularly dramatically endowed for a cartoon character, but she does have breasts. She probably doesn’t want to let ’em just flop around. I’ve googled around a bit, and discovered that there are backless bras. Any women out there reading this have experience with these? I can’t seem to find any sites that provide a view from the back; do these things actually go low enough for her wings to clear?

Are you talking about longlines? I think that would work.

The easiest way to get an idea of how low a longline would go is to look at wedding dresses with low backs. That's one of the few times I've ever worn such a thing: under a wedding dress.

Also, look at halter-top or athletic-cut bras. They have one strap that goes down the center, and a fairly low back.

You might look at some of the sports bras and shirts with sports bra construction on the Danskin website (www.danskin.com). If Mel's wings are where a person's shoulderblades are, those might do the trick. I recently bought one, and when I wear it, my shoulderblades are free from fabric. And she could just wear a cardigan or a hoodie over it if her back has to be covered for some reason.

That's what I was thinking too. In fact, when we did doe_eyed_bunny's wing construction for her Gargoyles costume, that's what we used.

You might also consider putting her in a corset from time to time. Not that I'm precisely sure what the difference between a corset and those "Flattering" bras is, actually.
