Taking the big leap

Today I gathered up the courage to do a scary thing I’d been meaning to do for weeks — I wiped my laptop’s hard drive, making it all one big partition, and set it up as a solely OSX machine. (I took full backups of both partitions first, of course.) So far, most stuff seems to be working. While I was at it I upgraded to the latest version of OSX (10.2.4), which meant I had to upgrade a few of the utilities I’ve been running. I still need to reinstall all the various extra Perl modules I’ve installed (Why the fuck don’t LWP and its prependents ship with the standard Perl distribution?), and it turns out I need to specifically install a version of OS9 there to run Classic. Stupid Steve. But those are manageable, non-scary tasks, provided I can find my OS9 CDs.
I’ve been working out steadily, though not watching what I eat nearly as carefully as I ought, so really haven’t lost any weight. Though actually, it occurs to me that maybe I’ve lost some fat and built up a bit of muscle. My legs certainly feel more muscular than two weeks ago. I need some cardio in my life, though. I was at a loss for what to do — walking’s good exercise, but I do enough of it that I’m probably not going to get much weightloss benefit out of anything I’m willing to do with snow still on the ground — till I realized I can use the lower portion of our stairs as a stair-stepping platform. (The stairs are too narrow to really run up and down the whole flight.) I think my heart-rate monitor is still in Brooklyn.
I’m also thinking of doing the first two weeks, the Induction Phase, of Atkins. If nothing else, it would give me an excuse to make Teresa’s bacon and egg soup. Hmm, though I don’t think I’m allowed to have pistachios in Induction. And I’d have to buy a whole bunch of new cooking implements.
