Oh man, I hurt! I ache all over. I ache in three counties. Today akawil,
ladymondegreen, and I rented a U-Haul to do a three-pointed furniture move. Beth had some bookshelves, a futon, and other stuff at her parents’ place, we needed bookshelves and other stuff, Chris needed a futon, I wanted to move some books and whatnot. We’d planned to move stuff last month, but got snowed out. So, today. Complications:
- We got moving over an hour later than originally intended.
- The truck we’d reserved wouldn’t start, so they had to scrounge us up a new one.
- The cops stopped us on the way into the Holland Tunnel to check that we weren’t carrying, like, explosives or anything.
- Our travel route involved Canal Street, which has the worst traffic of any street in NYC, even in Sundays.
- Our directions (from Yahoo Maps) told us to take the Brooklyn Bridge, which doesn’t allow trucks. We had to take the Manhattan Bridge and improvise.
- Damn, that shit was heavy.
- Couldn’t find a parking spot nearer Chris’s place than at the other end of a very long block.
- Damn, that futon mattress was not just heavy, but probably the single most awkward thing I’ve ever had to move in my life, including the couch which (years ago) Chris and I could get into our apartment only by taking the legs off and taking our door off its hinges.
- Canal Street, again.
- Yes, officer, I see the sign saying No commercial traffic in the Holland Tunnel, but I didn’t think a rented U-Haul counted as commercial traffic. OK, Lincoln Tunnel it is.
Finally, all done. I’ve got all my CDs over here now, and a bunch more books and two more Bozo’s shoeboxes full of comics pamphlets. We’ve got a couple more bookcases, a desk, and one of those tables you put a TV and VCR in.
We also discovered that the Journal Square area of Jersey City has a thriving Indian neighborhood. We stopped off for delicious vegetarian dosas and curries on the way home from dropping off the truck, around 9:30 (the first meal any of us’d had in about twleve hours).
I think I can skip tomorrow’s workout.
