Ooof, I just slept for twelve hours. I’d known I was tired, but not that much. I’ve spent all week meaning to get to sleep by midnight, to get in a full eight hours before going to work, but not quite managing it even once.

Played the usual game of Puerto Rico last night. We seem to be winding up in more close games as the group gets better. Last night we had another tie, with me coming in third one point behind the tied players. I was trying to work on my production game instead of just on money. I think the money strategy works better.

We also played Call My Bluff which had been pretty popular a year or two ago. (It’s out of print, but Liar’s Dice and Perudo are similar.) We had a few really odd bits of luck, with people winning on improbable rolls.

Back in ’02 I bought Call My Bluff for the club, and a copy of Medina, a city-building game with nice wooden pieces. We’d only played with it once till today. It’s got a strong playing-chicken component, and rewards patience and long-term thinking. Also good timing. I was the first player to get four palaces, but my placement was such that I got most of the high-scoring bonus tiles. I also managed to hold on to the most wall pieces till the end of the game.

And I played Carcassonne for the first time in months, my first time with the Inns & Cathedrals expansion. Unfortunately we hadn’t agreed to which set of farm-scoring rules we were using, and got into an argument over it towards the end of the game. I don’t think either of the two cathedral cities closed, nor did the longer of the inn roads. I did manage to close one the big cities that had seemed unfinishable, netting me a big batch of points. We all agreed that they didn’t make the large follower piece look sufficiently distinct from the regular followers.
