Yesterday’s comics:

Astonishing X-Men #2
Written by Joss Whedon, art by John Cassaday
Good writing, very good art, but I dunno. Whedon’s writing at television speed, so I feel like I’m maybe halfway through a one-hour episode of Emma the Sentinel Slayer. His writing is suffering in my eyes for the comparison with Grant Morrison’s idea-hose style. And his Emma Frost doesn’t quite have the edge that Morrison gave her. And Wolverine looks really stupid in that bright yellow Halloween costume. But there are some good scenes here, and one of the two plotlines is a daring one, so I’ll stick with it for another issue or two.

The Black Forest
Written by Todd Livingston & Robert Tinnell, art by Neil Vokes
A WW1 story with vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s creature! It’s got a good deal of charm, but the grayscale art is muddy, and the story has an unfortunate tendency to fall into Hollywood-style action-movie cliché. And the hero, supposedly an adult, is inexplicably drawn to look like a ten-year-old (a problem the cover artist, Michael A Oeming, solves by giving him a chin).

Today’s comics:

Ancient Joe
Created by C Scott Morse
Holy crap! This is the best damn comic I’ve read in weeks! Joe is a mysterious immortal with memory problems. We get to see him as both a mythological character, tricking the devil out of a bag of silver, and as an (almost) regular guy, drinking and boxing and hitching rides. The dialog sounds like real conversations, with distinctive voices. Man, this kicked ass.

To Heart, vol 1
Created by Ukyou Takao
I’m not entirely sure why I bought this. I’ll probably get sick of it halfway through, and waste some time trying to draw eyes like that.
