The Name of the Rose
Apr. 5th, 2005 09:08 pmWhew! Just finished Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose; used Google to search out a translation of the bit of Latin at the end which (as I’d thought) explains the title. The whole thing is a meditation on semiotics and the nature of mysteries and the way knowledge has been treated over the centuries. Lots of good, thinky fun, and some sly jokes. I’m looking forward to Foucault’s Pendulum (which
ladymondegreen has a copy of), but I think I want to read something else between.
Oh, and I’m really, really glad to have been born after the Enlightenment.
