cenoby: Probably means “convent”. A cenobite is a member of a convent or other religious community, from Latin coenobium, or convent.

manse: A cleric's house and land, especially the residence of a Presbyterian minister.

patera: Oh, this is good. I’d always just figured it meant “father”, but it was apparently a dish used by the Greeks and Romans in libations and sacrifices.

ayuntamiento: Spanish for union, joint, corporation, body of magistrates, town council, municipal government. Also means sexual intercourse.

maytera: Sean Whalen, on the Whorl mailing list, in a post defining a bunch of terms from the books, couldn’t find this exact word anywhere, and guesses that it’s derived from the Greek metera, “mother”.

Blood calls Silk a butcher; Severian was called one as well, at some point, wasn’t he? In any event, both of them do bloody work.

An interview with Gene Wolfe from last year. He says:
