Wacky theory: The GOP win in the 2000 and 2004 elections is due (in part) the the Internet. Specifically the Dot-com boom of the nineties, which turned Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, and New York into magnets attracting bright young people from all over the country. As a result, people who might have trended liberal in red states instead are living in blue states that would have voted Democratic anyway.

Obvious hole in theory: Many young net.geeks are right-leaning pseudo-libertarians who tend to vote Republican.
