iPod nano (product) red

(That’s the only explanation I can think of.)

Heh. Nah. All the items that are part of this campaign have the "(Product) Red" name on 'em somewhere.

(More on the campaign here).

It means "we're going to try to feel real good about ourselves while taking money you think you're donating to fight AIDS."

That's based on my reaction to a Gap sign advertising the same thing: huge "half the profits on anything in this category goes to thus-and-such charity." Not "half the sales," half the profits. Buy something you actually want and write a check to charity yourself.

The 4GB nano is the one with the biggest "margin" if we want to keep playing Devil's advocate. Of course, Apple's profit is likely less than $10, even before giving away $10.

Apple loses money on affiliate sales through the iTunes Music Store, as well, not to mention any other time they do a special kickback deal.
