[ sketch of young woman with short hair ] [ star ] I went out to dinner with my family last night, at the Ruth’s Chris steakhouse in Tarrytown. This was a celebration of the December birthdays (my grandmother and my brother-in-law), delayed by my mother getting sick last month. I’d gone off to Brooklyn to pick up the present I’d gotten weeks ago for my grandmother, but couldn’t find it, and eventually concluded that I had actually taken it to Jersey City at some point. Damn.

[ sketch of woman with cellphone ] This left me with not enough time to go back to Jersey and pick it up, but enough that I wound up with a hour to kill at Grand Central station before my train left, so I got a big cup of Starbucks frothy caffeine, plunked myself down in the dining concourse, and sketched people in ballpoint. (You can get some useful tonal variation with a good cheap ballpoint.)

[ sketch of young woman in coat ] I stayed over at my parents’ place, and today they took my out to Costco to buy huge amounts of stuff like real Americans do. Thirty-six rolls of toilet paper! Giant boxes of cereal! Three pounds of fresh salmon! Massive bottles of vitamins and Advil! A 40-unit package of disposable razors! I’m destroying the environment with my shopping habits. Ask me how! A seagull pooped on my coat in the parking lot, perhaps in revenge.

One can do wonders with a good cheap ballpoint, yo.

Costco is so HUGE!! I can never get out of there for less than an absurd amount of money that means I never go there. Hah!

The sketches are nice.

Beautiful sketches. Good to see you posting art again. Are we ever going to see some of that long-form sequential work you've been mentioning thinking about?

My word! Did you draw these? This is an aspect of you I've not seen before, I don't think!

Chris thinks you have.

Do you have a Contata 1994 or a "No Filkhogging" T-shirt? I know Avram drew the Cthulhu-drummer figure on the former, and I'm pretty sure he drew the latter as well. Plus he might have done illustrations for the Contata 1994 songbook. He has a portfolio up at grumer.com, too. I plug shamelessly so he doesn't have to.

heh

I'm just delighted with the image of eco-avenging para-assault gulls staking out a Westchester Costco...
