Saw Pirates of the Caribbean last night. Oh, this was good! If I’m eligible to vote in next year’s Hugos, this here is getting my Best Dramatic Presentation vote, unless something even better comes along. Not only does it have great special effects and brilliant fight scenes, but it’s got a complicated and internally-consistent magical maguffin. It’s also got Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp’s character, a charming rogue who totally walks away with the picture.

(Oh, and has everyone seen the Ergonomic Keyboard for Pirates?)

After, we walked across Central Park, to [livejournal.com profile] bigscary’s place, for odd drinks made with ice cream and alcohol. He lent me a wad of DVDs — Read or Die, the first disk of His and Her Circumstances, and all but the first disk of Cowboy Bebop. (LadyM’s parents got her a DVD player, which arrived earlier this week. It’s a Sampo, and yes, it’s little and black.)

You know, I totally hadn't thought of this in relation to the Hugos, but you're right; it's fantasy. And darned good fantasy. You're also right about Depp. As I believe I mentioned in my LJ, it's hard to look at anyone else when he's on screen.

Woot! We just had a "Waffles and Circumstances" breakfast, where i made waffles and we watched the first three episodes of His and Her Circumstances. I find the show so utterly rewatchable that I've decided to buy the DVD's to keep.

And a Sampo! Yay! That's an all code machine! :)

I don't like the English voices very much ... watch it again sometime in Japanese with subtitles if you're so inclined. ;) I've watched through the 4th disc, but the theme song is as you've heard it. There is lots of classical music that gets introduced during the course of the show. Could also be that you saw something much later, like a second season show and it had some new theme song. That certainly is not uncommon.

The Sampo is good. I have one and it's the machine that we used to sell at Scarecrow till they discontinued the model that we carried. Now we only sell the Malata.

Hee! I solved that problem by watching it many times over. ;)

Hey! I just realized you didn't say whether you liked it or not??

I wish you'd told me you were going so I could have gone too. I'm broke, but I'd have scrounged up the ten bucks to join you somehow.

If I go by myself, I'll hunt for a cheap matinee, though.

C. and I saw "Pirates" last night. It was great fluffy stuff. I'm sorry they didn't use Geoffrey Rush more, but we agreed that Cap't Jack and Elizabeth were enjoyable eye candy, and the moonlight curse was a very wicked maguffin to hang effects off of.

I need to make sure that His and Her Circumstances is in my GreenCiné queue. I've switched to them from Netflicks because they have a deeper and broader Anime selection.

1: KareKano: classical music is used much in the show, in many episodes, esp those with long previouslies, there is a substantial amount of classicesque music before the main theme (tenshi no yubikiri) starts up.
2: Pirates rocked muchly. Favorite bit? The coin being clinked along the skeleton's knuckles. And also? Smart protagonists. Always good. And the moonlight curse is incredibly well used as an effect. You realize later why we saw what we saw in the cell. And that, hey! There was a new moon when the Black Pearl attacked.
