I’ve been noodling around with more character designs, and I just tried coloring a couple of ’em with the Tombow brush markers. The brightness and immediacy are nice, but they don’t blend well, and you can’t mix colors like you can with watercolors. The distant ghost of my twenty-year-old self is cringing. He had just taken marker rendering classes in RIT’s Industrial Design program; he was all about the markers, intimidated by watercolors. It took over a decade for that fear to wear off.
( Marker sketches... )I’m still having mixed feelings about using brush markers for the basic drawing. Sometimes it seems to be working real well, other times I miss the detail my fine-points give me. In that big image, the yellow head was drawn in Pigma 005 fine-point, the blue and uncolored ones in Pitt brush marker.
