My parents came by today to drop off the vacuum cleaner they bought for me (to replace the antediluvian Electrolux that they palmed off on me when I moved out of their place a decade ago, and which finally died a few weeks back), and take me out shopping for various things.

First Stop — Ikea: A few months back my parents drove me out to the Ikea on Lawn Guy Land to buy parts for two shelving units. They were out of stock on one particular piece that I needed for the larger of the two units, but I got the rest of the stuff and stashed it in the room that I generally call the study but which is really the junk room. I got the smaller unit built, and used it to clean up my living room. Now that the newspapers are gone and I have the rest of the parts I can build the larger unit and start putting my comic books in order. I also got some small drawer units and a stand-alone laundry bag. Oh, and a ten-pack of AA batteries ’cause they were there and I’m running low.

Second Stop — Key Food: The one on Washington, not the one on Seventh. Seltzer, cranberry juice cocktail, mango sorbet, English muffins, and the makings of a mock lasagna.

Third Stop — That restaurant on the corner of Seventh Ave. and 2nd Street: I’ve been wanting to eat there for a while, but it’s a bit pricey for me. The roasted cauliflower and andouille soup was bland, the chicken satay in peanut sauce was marvelous, the grilled salmon was very good, and the pecan pie was delicious.

Fourth Stop — Tarzian Houseware: My old slotted spoon was broken, so I stopped in to pick up a new, metal, one, and wound up with a new garlic press, a plastic pitcher, an enameled saucepan, and one o’ them things to put cutlery in that hangs off of the new dishrack I bought a few months ago.

All of this compliments of my parents, who rock. Now I’m trying to scrape together the gumption to put together that shelving unit. I’m handicapped by the memory of how much of a pain it was to build the other one. I was going to watch Buffy to kill time, but it was the wedding episode, and my parents had just brought back the tape I gave them that has the musical episode on it (it also has an episode of The West Wing, which is what they borrowed it for), and I like that one better. I just realized that Buffy’s running off at the end of Spike’s song parallels Angelus running off after their kiss in that second season episode where they were possessed by ghosts.

buffy parallels

Are you sure that the parallels between Buffy running off and Angelus doing likewise were deliberate, or do you just think they're there regardless?
