My perl script told me that nothing I get was coming out this week. Then I spent $45. What’d I get?

Love Fights volume 1, collecting the first six issues of the superhero romance comic by Andi Watson. It’s billed on the back as “Manga/Romance”, probably because Oni wants to cash in on the hot-selling manga trend — it’s even bound digest-sized with a stripe down the spine edge, and has cute, sort-of chibi-style drawings between some of the chapters. The storytelling isn’t manga style, though. Or at least not the generic manga style you see in most of TokyoPop’s offerings. Lots more panels on a page, and Watson actually pays attention to page composition and the way it conveys action. The art is a grainy, grayscale, simplified style that occasionally breaks into Art Deco complexity. The story is utterly charming — a guy, a girl, a superhero with a paternity suit, a talking cat. I can’t wait for the next volume.

24 Hour Comics, edited by Scott McCloud. A collection of 24-hour comics by various artists. Haven’t read it yet.

Criminal Macabre by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. A supernatural detective story. The art looked interesting in the store, so I bought it. Haven’t read it yet. I seem to be reading a lot of cop comics recently. Oh, I see now it’s by the same team that did 30 Days of Night, which I only read the first issue of. Hrm.
