I suspect that work is going to be two or three days, followed by a few days of not working, followed by more days of work. It depends on what the client does.

One of my coworkers mentioned The Art Store, which I discovered is open till 8, so I checked the joint out. Lots o’ acrylic paints. Big tubs of medium and ground. I can get more Golden absorbent ground than I’ll use in a year for $17. And some good-looking small canvases, but I’ll have to do some comparison shopping.

Some interesting markers downstairs. Letraset is now selling batched kits of Tria marker dye and encouraging you to mix your own colors. I tried some Copic markers and found out why all the hip young manga artists are using ’em — they blend really well. And it turns out that Copic also makes a line of fine-line drawing pens, with pigment-based ink that’s proof against both water and other Copic markers, and they include a brush marker that’s similar to the water-soluble Japanese one I’ve been using a lot recently and wishing was waterproof. Unfortunately, the Copic fine-line pens have ink that sort of grays out as it dries, and bleeds much more easily.

I wound up buying a couple of books:

Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green by Michael Wilcox (2nd ed) is a book about color mixing. The name stuck in my head from when [livejournal.com profile] nancylebov mentioned it umpty-odd years back, and I pages through it in the store. Most of it is the sort of stuff you pick up in any good course on color theory (like the difference between warm and cool colors and how it helps you mix bright or dull secondaries), but Wilcox brings in the effects of mixing transparent and opaque paints, which I’ve never seen anyone tackle before.

L’Autre, by Luc Delahaye and Jean Baudrillard, the faces of 100 Paris metro riders, photographed close-up surreptitiously in the 1990s. There’s some good variety in here, should make for good practice.
