Stayed late at the office today, finishing up a butt-load of work so it can go off to QA. (Don’t worry, there’s more to do when this lot’s done.) Between that and the rain, I skipped NYRSF, and shopped for comics at Midtown instead of Cosmic. I wasn’t expecting to find anything, and wound up getting four things I’d never heard of:

Autumn #1, by Tommy Kovac
$2.95, Slave Labor Graphics
A goth comic with very nice art. Autumn is a cute, but nasty, little witch who finds herself exiled to a mysterious village at the heart of the darkly magical Black Wood. I’m not interested enough to follw this in floppy (it takes Finder or a good Grant Morrison book to get that kind of dedication), but if I ever see it in TPB, I’ll probably buy it.

Legend of Liquid Fury preview, by Kurt Christenson and Chris Chua
$5, Arghbrain (I think)
Bought this one purely for the art, which looks like a cross between Marc Hempel’s and Matt Howarth (in his more ornate phase), but taken so far as to lose legibility. This is a 64-page preview of a 150+ page graphic novel that’s “coming soon”. Dunno if I could stand this for 150 pages, but the preview is probably worth it for inspirational value.

Ursula, by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá
$9.95, AiT/Planet Lar
This is an amazingly charming little book, with beautiful, extremely accomplished art. The story starts out well, but gets arbitrary and a little incoherent as it goes. Still, heaps o’ charm and gorgeous art.

Mariko Parade, by Frédéric Boilet and Kan Takahama
$17.99, Fanfare/Ponent Mon
A graphic novel, hefty enough that I won’t finish it tonight. Beautiful art, grayscale work, a combination of pencil and computer shading, with maybe a bit of wash. I’ve just read the beginning, not enough to get a handle on the story.
