The Animation Show
Mar. 16th, 2005 10:22 pmJust got back from seeing The Animation Show with
bugsybanana. A pretty good assortment of pieces this year. I’d seen Rockfish before, online, but it was much more impressive on the big screen. Ward 13 was a nicely done little horror thriller. Fallen Art was my favorite, visually lush with character designs reminiscent of Terry Gilliam’s animations for Monty Python, and a sick little payoff. Don Hertzfeldt’s The Meaning of Life wasn’t quite as funny as his pieces in last year’s show, but it’s a technical step forward for him. Reading about how long it took him makes me wish he’d just get a damn computer already.
There’s always at least one long and pointless piece in each animation show, and F.E.D.S., a rotoscoped piece about the people who give out samples at supermarkets, is this one’s. Even it had some visual snazz, so I didn’t get too bored. In general, even the duller pieces were visually interesting.
The Animation Show is playing at the Cinema Village, and it looks like it’s there through March 24th. Non-New Yorkers can check the schedule to see when it’s coming to your area. Looks like April 1st for Boston, and it’s already been to Seattle.

Date: 2005-03-17 04:27 am (UTC)That's wicked awesome!!! Sorry to bother you (as we don't know each other...yet), but I had no idea there was a Monty Python animation! (I'm not young enough to be a kid anymore, but I've never outgrown my love for cartoons).
Do you mind telling me if they're really any good? Thanks in advance!
