Too humid for a title

Man, the weather’s getting hot and sweaty.

Went into Manhattan for comics, took cadhla, brief diversions for ferrets and exploding pens. Handed her off to ladymondegreen, met womzilla and crew for dinner, then off for NYRSF, and a nice long chat with tnielsenhayden.

New Finder out this week, revisiting the protagonist of Mystery Date, and an old Scott McCloud trick. Also new Cerebus, double issue, first issue of last story-arc; sadly, it’s still not comics, so I’m not buying it. Also got Alan Moore’s Writing for Comics, and the first volume of TokyoPop’s Under the Glass Moon.

I’m getting the hang of using these gray brush markers sort of like pencils. The one up top is something from last week, a fragment of an idea for a comic strip, Nixon as a supervillain. These other two are from today. Chris, seeing the one on the left, asked why my characters always look so sad, so I did the one on the right.

I wouldn't say all of your drawings look sad, reflective maybe, or perhaps burdened, but not altogether unhappy. They look human.

The smiling one however looks a lot like an ex-boyfriend of mine who tried to put on a false smile so people wouldn't figure out that he was sad. If I had to judge, I'd say it was one of the sadder people you've drawn.

I said your characters looked glum, not sad. A slight difference.

Now that I think about it, you cheery guy's smile looks a wee bit forced, as per LMG. But I did suggest a manic grin, so it's not too far off base.

The smile doesn't reach manic guy's eyes. He looks like he has just met someone he doesn't like, and is trying to make the best of it, when he really wants to tear that person's throat out.
