Fish again

Ooorf! Went out for all-you-can-eat sushi again last night. I think I need to stop doing that. Next time, I’ll spend less money and just get a regular amount of the things I like best (those eel-avocado handrolls were good, so were the salmon-ikura ones, and just plain eel nigiri). Cheaper, and I’ll feel better.
My parents got me an air conditioner. The Consumer Reports website has a form you can use to calculate how many BTUs you need — much more detailed than the usual system of just figuring based on room size. I’d been going to go with a 5000 BTU model, but the form recommended around 6000 BTUs, considering that I’m in an attic room. Good thing I checked — the model I got takes a few hours to get my room really comfortable, rather than just bearable. A weaker model might not have been even adequate.
I’d been supposed to get a bigger air conditioner for downstairs, but when I realized that we were radically underestimating our needs, I held off. Today’s assignment is to wander around Sears and BJ’s taking notes on what’s available.

Date: 2003-06-27 09:30 am (UTC)There are window units in the older homes here, but all new construction is central air, and older houses like mine are generally retrofitted with it. Of course, I live in a swamp where it's triple-digits outside for three months of the year, so A/C makes it bearable.
I suspect choosing a central unit isn't that different from choosing a window unit except that you don't have to worry about attic space issues. In that case, my advice is: don't undercool! Get more cooling power than they say you'll need. I'm thin-blooded and like it warm, but most people want it to stay cooler than Consumer Reports et al. seem to think they should.
