It’s also pretty darn easy to drop $70 on, um, watercolor and illustration board, two brushes (including one I‘d never seen before — a “cat’s tongue”), three pads, breakfast, and a CD.

I’ve been shopping at Pearl Paint for over a decade, but I find I can‘t recommend it anymore. Its inventory has gone to the dogs — the 3rd floor selection of illustration board has been largely empty for the past few weeks (and when I asked, I was told it’s been like that for months). I’ve heard that the store has a new (and sucky), computer-based inventory system; I’ve also heard that they’re having cash-flow problems. I don’t know which, if either, of these accounts for the problem, and I don’t much care; I just know that I can’t rely on Pearl to stock what I need when I need it.

My new favorite art store? New York Central Art Supply, on Third Avenue, south of 11th St.

That's a nice touch, having the things you want. I still want to find a moderately priced yarn shop in New York. Or that is, a moderately priced supply of yarn, it doesn't have to be a whole yarn shop, as those things tend to get annoyingly pricey. I miss Woolworths a great deal.
