So I tried a couple other pens:

Still more sketches )

The drawing of Melorne, on the left, was done with a Pilot Precise V5, a black rolling-ball pen. I’ve been using these for writing for I’ve forgotten how many years now, long enough that I’ve forgotten that I used to use them for doodling too. Figures that it’d turn out to be one of my two favorite sketches of her. I blocked it out beforehand with a Dart Copy-Not non-repro blue marker. (Oh, and here’s much more than most people would ever want to know about Pilot Precise pens, via Phil Agre’s Red Rock Eater Digest.)

The other was done with a Triart marker, a Japanese pen I picked up at NY Central a few weeks ago. It’s got three tips — a thin plastic tip, a thick chisel point, and a brush tip. Very dark, but also very soaky. It threatened to soak through the 65-pound sketchpad paper.

I’ve just finished the Honor Among Punks collection. It’s good, well worth reading. The art is wonderful, and the characters are interesting. The story works on some levels — well-paced, engaging — but they are built around three main crimes, and the motivations given for the crimes just didn’t convince me in two cases, and in the third I saw the shocking surprise coming, and still thought it was something of a stereotype. The author (or authors — Davis is listed as both artist and writer, but Reed has a non-specific “co-creator” credit) came up with plausible details to wrap around the crimes, but couldn’t come up with reasons for the crimes that fit as well into the stories.

Anyway, that’s my one complaint. Oh, except for the one I made before, that I didn’t see why this needed to be set in an alternate history, unless maybe the degree of power that the aristocrats have here is greater than what they have in the real world.

Gah. For the past few months, each time it’s rained or threatened to, I’ve been grumbling about how my lightweight folding umbrella has vanished. Moreso since a couple weeks ago when I went back to Bed Bath & Beyond and saw that they weren’t selling that model anymore. Well, today it got cold enough (mid-60s) for me to get my light jacket out, and there in the pocket was my umbrella, along with some material from MoCCA, which tells me when I left it there.

Today’s sketches, done with simple pens in a cheap sketchpad at Basic coffee (’cause Ground was closed):
